Lancaster Dental Associates, PC

dental surgeonWe all want to have a great smile, but unfortunately, that's easier said than done. Nearly half the population -- 48% of all people -- say that they're unhappy with the way their teeth look, with discoloration being the most-cited reason (64%). Brushing and flossing aren't always enough, especially if you have a genetic predisposition to tooth decay or gum disease. Despite our best oral hygiene habits -- including regular visits to the dentist -- sometimes, more work is necessary.

How can you know when to book an appointment with a dental surgeon? Your regular family dentist will likely let you know, but if you have concerns about any of the following issues, it can't hurt to make the call yourself.

Implants
About 74% of all adults have had a tooth extracted, but it can be uncomfortable, unattractive, and dangerous to your oral health to simply leave that gaping tooth hole unfilled. Dental implant technology has come a long way in a short amount of time. Many dental surgeons now use CEREC crowns for implants, which can be fitted with just one visit as opposed to traditional crowns, which used to take two or three.

TMJ or Bite Problems
Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, can be fixed with corrective jaw surgery, as can overbites and underbites. This can restore a patient's normal and comfortable bite function and strengthen the jaw overall for a better quality of life. Many people who suffer from TMJ experience frequent headaches or jaw pain that can be alleviated with proper alignment.

Wisdom Teeth
Oftentimes, people don't have enough space in their jaws to accommodate the extra molars that grow in early adulthood -- what we commonly call wisdom teeth. Whether you're experiencing pain from wisdom teeth coming in or are having complications post-removal, dental surgeons can address wisdom teeth and associated pain with proper removal, surgery, or fixes.

If you're having problems with your teeth that run deeper than the surface, it may be time to talk with your regular dentist about surgery. Pain that affects our jaws tends to affect our daily lives overall. A healthy smile is a happy one!
